Doug Wilson Makes Me Sick

Well, okay, not like you think.

In fact, I really quite enjoy Wilson and appreciate him a great deal. I am still committed to doing a review, of sorts, of his two messages at the recent Desiring God Conference for Pastors on "Father Hunger"––a fascinatingly titled topic, if ever there was one.

But I'm really beginning to wonder if Wilson doesn't also make me sick. Let me explain.

It was back in 2005, that a friend flew me out to California for a quick, day and a half debate between James White and Doug Wilson on the topic of justification. I don't remember much of the content, but I do remember what a wonderful time that was. Both men were gracious, genteel, and yet firm in their resolve and commitments. This was the way, I thought to myself, that "disputes" within the Church should be dealt with and debated.

However, almost immediately, upon my return home to Minnesota, I came down wit a real case of influenza (not the stuff most of us call the "flu" with runny noses and sore throats) which, within three days, developed into a full onslaught with pneumonia. It was serious business. I was bed-ridden for six weeks, missed that many Sunday's worth of preaching and still took me about three months afterward to feel like I really had my legs back underneath me.

All because I had been to see & hear Doug Wilson.

Then, just a few short weeks ago, I went to the above described conference, heard Wilson speak, sat in fascination as he and John Piper dialogued for about two hours and then came home, anxious to spend a few more hours going over the conference recordings and digesting what I'd heard.

Instead, within five days of my return, I'm flat on my back with a chest cold that began bringing back haunting memories of the Pneumonia Battle of '05. I missed preaching this past Sunday, managed to make it for a leadership training meeting on Monday evening and I think, thankfully, I'm about over it all.

But all due to going to see and hear Doug Wilson!

So, while I am mentally committed to reviewing his messages from a few weeks ago, I'm reluctant to do so. While I realize this is a recording and not himself in all his bold persona live, I fear that my computer may get a virus.

Just from seeing and hearing Doug Wilson!
