Surrendered Sleep by Charles Page – a book review

About the book –

surrendered sleep

Surrendered Sleep approaches insomnia from a biblical perspective and exposes several heart attitudes you may experience in your journey for rest. These attitudes may not only affect the way you sleep but also the way you relate to God. Dr. Page will challenge you to wrap your mind around the concept of a God who is just as active during your sleep—or sleeplessness as during your wakeful hours.

Surrendered Sleep empowers readers with tools to:

  • Understand the association of an active pursuit of God with refreshing sleep
  • Be more aware of God’s activity as one lays down for rest
  • Recognize strategies and habits that wisely predispose to a good night’s sleep
  • Effectively battle thoughts, concerns and attitudes that potentially hinder sleep
  • Integrate a personal approach to health care and the Christian faith
  • Recognize common sleep disorders and their role in our health
  • Approach chronic insomnia and sleep disorders with a heart of endurance
  • Sacrifice our sleep in order to serve others and further God’s kingdom

About the Author–

My Review–

Dr. Page provides sound biblical insight into how to help us sleep well. By providing a solid theology of sleep and of the God who does not, he assists the reader in learning how to develop a wise and receptive heart to God’s work in our life. Not ignoring actual sleep maladies, the doctor nevertheless sees most of our sleep issues revolving around heart attitudes more than physical disorders. With a clear call to trust in God with all your heart, Page offers an excellent guide in how to use God’s gift of sleep well.

I appreciated Dr. Page’s solid biblical foundations through the entire book. He grounds everything he recommends in the Scriptures. Yet, the author does not spend a great deal of time proof-texting. More often than not, Page uses larger portions of Scripture, set in their context, in order to draw out the principles for his writing.

His work is also theologically anchored; he readily acknowledges God’s sovereignty and the comfort this brings into our hearts.

One of the features I also enjoyed were the many sidebars. Rather than simply quoting from the text itself (which, according to this reviewer, is an annoying publisher’s gimmick to make the obvious stand-out and to fill more space on the page), each sidebar asks questions for reflection or further study––a very helpful addition to this work.

At the close of Surrendered Sleep, Dr. Page provides a sleep diary the reader may use to help determine sleep patterns and heart attitudes, as well as observe tendencies in your life that can be of service in producing better sleep.

One final note: While the author is a medical doctor, I was grateful that he recognizes the spiritual element in our “life of sleep.” He does not ignore physical disorders when it comes to sleeping (he devotes a good chapter to these issues). However, he does acknowledge that our heart’s attitude will so often determine our body’s response and this can be reflected in how we sleep––or don’t!

This was a very helpful book. I’ll draw upon it more when I counsel with people who tell me they’re so very tired. I recommend this book to you.
