Or, to put it in other words, why I'm a Calvinist.
There are many verses which speak of the glory of God's sovereignty in all things, but one stands above them all, in my humble opinion: Romans 11.36.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Romans 11.36, ESV
From Him––all things are from the Lord God, our Creator and Sustainer. Our very life comes from Him:
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb." (Psalm 139.13, ESV)
"…he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything." (Acts 17.25, ESV)
Everything we have comes from Him:
"What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Corinthians 4.7, ESV)
Through Him––Not only is He the source of all things ("from him"), He is the means of all things. This means that the will so many attempt to declare as "free" is only so when it is found to be in Christ Jesus. Apart from Him, our wills are bound, slaves to sin, the flesh and the devil. We can only exercise this will in accordance with our true master. When still in the flesh, we exercise our wills only according to our own desires. However, this God who is gracious and who has mercy upon whom He has mercy, gives us a new heart, with new affections AND a new master of our will. this new master is Christ Jesus. Now, we are slaves to righteousness (Romans 6.19). He is the means by which all this comes about. Had He not worked in our heart through His Word and Spirit, we would never have come to Him.

To Him––He is also the goal of all things. Once, when we were dead in our trespasses and sins, we lived only for our own flesh. Now, we live for His glory. Everything we do, whether we eat or drink, is to be for His glory (1 Corinthians 10.31). He is the end of all things.
I love to ascribe sovereignty to the Lord. Romans 11.36 helps me to do exactly that. Amen and praise the Lord!
